Rhyme Time Set 1

About this Book

This packet contains 104 rhyming card pairs, making it a total of 208 individual cards. The focus of this first set is on short vowels in a primarily CVC pattern.

How to use this book

I have intended the contents of this book to be used in a Make-a-Match game. To set up for this game, print all the pages, laminate for durability and then cut the cards apart. To play, a group of 2-4 children place all the playing cards face-side down. They then take turns flipping over 2 cards at a time. If a rhyming match is made, the pair is kept. If not, the cards are turned face-side down again and the next child has his or her turn. Game play continues until all the cards have been matched. The child with the most pairs at the end of the game is the winner. Afterwards, children can complete one of the recording sheets included in this packet.

Other ideas for games:

What rhymes with...? (for 2 players)

Before beginning, the rhyming pairs are divided into 2 separate decks. One child holds a deck, looks at the picture on the first card and says: “What rhymes with... (man, for example)?” The second child looks through his or her own deck and finds the rhyming match. Then he or she asks the same question for one of his or her cards. Game play continues until all the rhyming cards have been matched. They can then complete one of the recording sheets included in this packet.

Snap (for 2 or more players)

The cards are divided between the children. Children hold their cards face down and take turns putting down the card from the top of their pile, saying its name as they do so. If the newly laid down card rhymes with the one under it, any of the players try to hit the pile with their hand and say “snap”. The first person to hit the pile and say “snap” gets to keep all the cards.

Happy Teaching :)

I really liked this! I laminated it and hid the different pictures in a sensory bin. They were then able to find the pictures and decide which ones rhymed. They liked it a lot! I can see it being used as an print and go as well!

A great resource that I used with both of my kids. It kept them engaged and having fun while learning. A total win-win! And now that I'm heading back to the preK classroom, I cannot wait to use this with my students.
