Description

Right-Angled Trigonometry: Pair or Group Tasks

4 tasks for students to think, do reasoning and work mathematically to identify and pose problems, and select and apply appropriate strategies (by drawing a diagram and measure the lengths and angles with appropriate tools then check the results with a scientific calculator) to find:

* an angle given a trigonometric ratio

* trigonometric ratios of complementary angles

* complementary angles in a right-angled triangle

Teaching idea:

Students work in pairs or groups to complete Tasks A to D then they compare their findings with another pair (group).

Level of Difficulty: Beginner (Easy)

Grades: 9th to 11th

Also suitable for Australian Curriculum

  • Use similarity to investigate the constancy of the sine, cosine and tangent ratios for a given angle in right-angled triangles (ACMMG223)
  • Apply trigonometry to solve right-angled triangle problems (ACMMG224)
  • Apply Pythagoras’ theorem to solve problems (ACMEM116)
  • Apply the tangent ratio to find unknown angles and sides in right-angled triangles (ACMEM117)
  • Work with the concepts of angle of elevation and angle of depression (ACMEM118)
  • Apply the cosine and sine ratios to find unknown angles and sides in right-angled triangles (ACMEM119)
  • Review sine, cosine and tangent as ratios of side lengths in right-angled triangles (ACMMM028)
  • Review the use of the trigonometric ratios to find the length of an unknown side or the size of an unknown angle in a right-angled triangle (ACMGM034)
