As a K-1 educator for 26 years, I know that memorization of facts can be difficult for some students, but it does not mean that they do not have math potential. When implementing Rocket Math Addition, I have seen some students become very discouraged due to the fact that they cannot remember the facts fast enough—therefore producing a lower timed test score. In addition, I often wondered if all students understand the facts presented or are just rattling off a memorized number. As an early childhood educator, I want to increase students’ math fluency through number sense development—not just rote memorization. Thus this product was created to enhance the Rocket Math Addition program in a developmentally appropriate way.
Rocket Math Addition Launchpads shift the focus from pure math fact memorization to helping students develop an understanding of the equations at each level. The process involves all modes of learning—kinesthetic, visual, and auditory to assist all types of learners. In addition, the implementation process consists of the repetitiveness young children need to attain new information, assisting in their rote memorization of the problems.
This product has three main spaced themed components-Command Center Directions, for proper implementation, Leveled Launchpad Books, to be used before Rocket Math partner work, and Leveled Soaring Take Home Sheets to connect home and school learning.
