Description

This ESOL-friendly worksheet helps newcomer and English learner students practice addition and subtraction using dice, number lines, and writing scaffolds. Students roll two dice, find the sum and difference, and use provided sentence frames to explain their steps in English. The activity supports both math skills and academic language development, making it perfect for pre-algebra, intervention groups, or ESOL math classes.

This worksheet can also be used for earlier grades, such as pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and early elementary school.

Teacher Tips:

  • Model one example on the number line before students begin.
  • Pair students so they can say their steps out loud before writing them.
  • Encourage use of the sentence frames to build complete math sentences in English.
  • Once students are confident, extend the activity by adding negative numbers to the dice rolls.
