About the store
With more than three decades of dedicated experience in education, both as a classroom teacher and a resource developer, I have had the privilege of positively impacting students' learning journeys across various roles and settings. My journey began in an independent school in South Africa, where I spent 16 enriching years teaching and refining my craft. During a period of self-employment, I channeled my passion for education into creating thematic units, worksheets, posters, and games tailored to support educators in enhancing their teaching practices. Upon returning to full-time teaching, I dedicated nearly four years to nurturing young minds in Grade 1 before transitioning into a dynamic Visual Art role. In this capacity, I had the pleasure of guiding students from Grades 1 to 7, enriching their creative expression and understanding of the arts. Additionally, I have extended my impact beyond the artroom by teaching Grade 6 Social Science and Life Skills to Grade 4 students, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience. Beyond teaching, I have actively contributed to professional development within the educational community. I have facilitated teacher training sessions at a local Teachers' Centre, focusing on effective planning for teaching English as an Additional Language. Furthermore, I am proud to have authored a series of isiXhosa workbooks designed to support learners from Grades 3 to 7, which are widely used across schools in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces of South Africa. Currently, I continue to inspire and mentor students as the Head of Junior School Art at an international school in South Korea, where I am committed to fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love for learning among my students. My journey in education has been driven by a passion for empowering young minds and supporting fellow educators, and I look forward to continuing to make a positive impact in the field of education.

Teaching style

My teaching philosophy revolves around fostering creativity and integration in the classroom, making learning not only effective but also exciting and meaningful for young learners. I believe in integrating subjects whenever possible, allowing students to see connections between different areas of knowledge and reinforcing their understanding through real-world contexts. In my lessons and activities, I strive to accommodate a variety of learning styles, recognising that each child learns differently. By incorporating visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, and tactile elements, I ensure that every student can engage with the material in ways that resonate most with them. This approach not only supports their academic growth but also nurtures their individual strengths and interests. Central to my teaching practice is the use of discussion and creative thinking as foundational tools for communication and learning. I encourage open dialogue, where students are empowered to express their thoughts, ask questions, and explore ideas collaboratively. Through activities that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and imagination, I aim to cultivate a classroom environment where curiosity thrives and students feel inspired to explore new concepts and perspectives. In addition to my creative approach to teaching across subjects, my practice as an Art teacher further enriches the learning experience for my students. I integrate artistic expression into interdisciplinary learning, allowing students to explore connections between art and other subjects such as history, science, and literature. This interdisciplinary approach not only enhances their understanding of various topics but also encourages them to see the world through a creative lens. In my Art lessons, I embrace a variety of artistic techniques and mediums, catering to diverse learning styles and preferences. Whether through painting, sculpture, drawing, or fibre arts, I provide opportunities for students to experiment, collaborate, and develop their artistic skills. By nurturing their creativity and self-expression, I aim to foster confidence and a sense of accomplishment in each student. Ultimately, my goal is to instill a lifelong love for learning and creativity in my students by creating a supportive and stimulating classroom atmosphere where they can discover, create, and grow academically and personally.

My own education history

I pursued my educational journey at the University of Port Elizabeth in South Africa, where I completed a Bachelor of Primary Education degree. This foundational experience equipped me with the pedagogical knowledge and skills essential for teaching young learners effectively. Throughout my studies, I immersed myself in the principles of education, learning about child development, curriculum design, and teaching methodologies that form the backbone of my approach in the classroom. My time at the University of Port Elizabeth provided me with a solid academic foundation while also fostering a passion for lifelong learning and professional growth. It prepared me to embark on a fulfilling career in education, where I continue to apply the insights and techniques learned during my studies to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences for my students.

Additional biographical information

Outside of the classroom, my passions extend into various creative pursuits that complement my teaching philosophy. I am an avid reader, finding inspiration and new perspectives through literature that I often incorporate into my teaching. Painting and engaging in crafts are not only hobbies but also outlets for my own creativity, which I believe enriches my ability to foster creativity in my students. My enthusiasm for teaching goes beyond the classroom walls. I am deeply committed to staying informed about the latest developments and innovations in education and educational philosophy. This curiosity leads me to frequent web browsing sessions, where I explore new ideas, teaching strategies, and research findings that can enhance my instructional practices. I believe in the importance of continuous learning and growth as an educator, and I am dedicated to integrating new knowledge and insights into my teaching approach. Through my diverse interests and ongoing professional development, I aim to bring a dynamic and informed perspective to my role as an educator. By staying engaged with both the arts and the evolving landscape of education, I strive to create a stimulating and enriching educational experience for my students, empowering them to explore their interests, think critically, and embrace lifelong learning.
