Description

This PowerPoint presentation introduces students to the Roman system of names and includes information on the dies lustricus, the two- and three-name systems, names of men, women, freedmen and slaves, etc. All the slides include pictures and the Latin terminology regarding Roman names. It works well during the first weeks of Latin class, especially if the teacher wishes to give students Latin names. Tried and well loved suggestion: 1) Show the Names PowerPoint and give the students a list of Latin names and their meanings. 2) Ask the students to select a 2-3 word Latin name of their choosing. 3) Give a handout on the bulla and its importance. 4) Give students poster board circles with a hole punched out & yarn for hanging the bulla around the neck. 4) Ask students to make their own bullas, with their Latin name on one side and a design to ward off the 'Evil Eye of Envy' on the other side. Students can work on this at home or do as a classroom project, time and patience permitting.:-) Great as a change of pace mini-lesson. Also works well as a mini-cultural lesson and as enrichment material for social studies students and for the gifted and talented.
