Description

According to Frank Otto from drexel.edu, "At any skill level, making art reduces stress hormones." I believe by mixing art with math, it can potentially prevent math anxiety and lessen the stress of classwork. "Negative feelings and stressful situations can interfere to different degrees with success in mathematical tasks," states Maloney and Beilock in an article called, "Stress, Time Pressure, Strategy Selection and Math Anxiety in Mathematics: A Review of the Literature" found in frontiersin.org.

This assignment is a wonderful way to check basic comprehension of ordering rational numbers from least to greatest without the stress induction math typically brings to some children.

Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (š˜¢/š˜£ = š˜¢ Ć· š˜£). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. For example, interpret 3/4 as the result of dividing 3 by 4, noting that 3/4 multiplied by 4 equals 3, and that when 3 wholes are shared equally among 4 people each person has a share of size 3/4. If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?
Write, interpret, and explain statements of order for rational numbers in real-world contexts. For example, write -3° š¶ > -7° š¶ to express the fact that -3° š¶ is warmer than -7° š¶.
Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
