Description
Advanced Logic & Variables
10 Editable structured Lessons | Designed for 45-Minute Class Periods
This unit builds directly on sensor-based programming and moves students into advanced logic structure, program flow analysis, and variable-based decision making.
Designed as Weeks 5–6 in a structured robotics progression, this unit includes 10 intentionally sequenced lessons. Students move from analyzing complex conditional logic to designing programs that track and manage state using variables and counters.
This unit emphasizes not just whether code works — but whether it is structured well, efficient, and logically sound.
What Students Will Learn
• Competing conditions and execution order
• Sensor priority and override behavior
• Identifying inefficient but functional code
• Loop structure and responsiveness
• Debugging and refactoring complex programs
• Using variables to store and update data
• Designing counter systems
• Preventing unrealistic values
• Creating conditional reactions based on stored data
• Explaining and justifying design decisions
This 10-Lesson Unit Includes
Week 5 – Advanced Logic & Code Design
✔ Competing Conditions
✔ Sensor Priority & Override
✔ Inefficient Logic That Still Works
✔ Partial Infinite Loops
✔ Predict • Spot • Fix • Explain
Week 6 – Variables & State Management
✔ Introduction to Variables & Memory
✔ Counters & Hub Display
✔ Conditions Using Variables
✔ Preventing Unrealistic Values
✔ Smart Capacity Counter Project (with rubric & reflection)
The Smart Capacity Counter project is also available as a standalone mini-unit and is included here as part of the complete Weeks 5–6 progression.
Each lesson is designed for one full 45-minute class period.
Pacing & Structure
• 10 total lessons
• 1 lesson = 1 class period
• Approximately 2 weeks of instruction
• Follows Units 1 and 2 in a structured robotics pathway
Teaching Guide
Begin with advanced “Read the Code” lessons to strengthen students’ understanding of execution order and logic structure before introducing variables.
After students demonstrate confidence analyzing multi-condition programs, transition into variable-based lessons. Introduce variables conceptually as “robot memory,” then move into counters and conditional reactions.
The unit culminates in the Smart Capacity Counter project, where students design a system that tracks, updates, and reacts based on stored values.
Emphasize explanation and justification throughout the process.
Encourage students to compare solutions and evaluate code quality — not just correctness.
Perfect For
• Middle school robotics
• Advanced SPIKE Prime programming
• Coding electives
• Engineering pathways
• Competition preparation
