Description

This is a great project for anytime of year, but especially spring! It incorporates Math (conversion of measurements in customary and metric units; perimeter and area in both customary and metric units; fractions; simplifying fractions) and optional Science and Writing activities (keeping a Science journal of the seedlings' growth, and a choice of 2 writing prompts). This project can be used with just the materials given, OR you can opt to actually plant seeds and let the students create a small garden. The activities can be completed in 1 week, or over a period of several weeks if done in Centers.

I used parts of this with my thematic unit for summer school. I wanted to use more of it, but the math portion of the seed packets didn't provide enough information. It didn't explain how many seeds were in the packet, or what the yield is. I did use the equivalent fraction portion of the activities. They were very valuable and engaging to the students.

Thank you for the input, Regina! I have edited the seed packets to show the quantity of seeds in each one. The yield would be tricky to put on the packets because there's no way to predict this. You could let the students "assume" that each plant would yield x amount of fruit and let them work from that. Again, thanks for the heads-up!

I was excited to use this, but there were seed packets missing. I did not end up using it at all.

I am so sorry! I have updated the product with the missing seed packets and fixed a text issue with the Baby Lima customary measurement seed packet. If you will not be able to use the product in the future, please let me know and I will be glad to check on a refund for you! Again, I apologize for the inconvenience! :)

I really love this project for my 4th grade living things and integrating math, however, the cherry tomato and forget me not seed packets are missing. There is also an error mixing standard and metric measurements on one of the seed packets.

Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
