Description
Some of my standards that my students struggle to master are those that deal with analyzing text features. They are able to identify many text features within a variety of informational texts, but when they are asked why the author chose a particular text feature or the impact the feature has to the meaning of the text or the experience for the reader - they drew a blank. I created this exercise as a way to have them be the decision makers. I usually begin this by a quick review of text features we have introduced, and then in pairs we read the article. Then, with their partners, they are to pull out information that might be important to highlight, or make more readable for the reader. I will tell you. This is NOT an easy exercise (I always allow them to work in partners), but it is SO engaging and valuable in their understanding of the use of text features! I hope you find it as helpful and relevant as I did!
