Description

This Digital Sound Design, Music Labproject directly supports NGSS Standards MS.ETS.1.1–1.4: To plan, test, and improve design solutions by clearly defining the problem, evaluating ideas using a structured process, analyzing test data to combine the best features, and using models to support repeated testing and improvement. The purpose of this 45 minute, 5E investigation is to explore how music and coding intersect through digital tools, enabling students to apply basic computer science principles such as functions and sequences. In this activity, students will explore the Code.org Music Lab: Jam Session platform to experiment with sound, collaborate with AI, and use coding blocks to create original digital music. Students will apply structured thinking, evaluate features, and refine their work through an iterative design process. This integrates music, coding, and problem-solving in a STEAM-based environment. This package includes a lesson plan, activity guide, response worksheet, answer key, and digital response worksheet. Just print, prep, and it’s ready to go.

NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
