Description

Do your students like to experiment? Do they like to design and build? Here’s the perfect combination of those two things in three amazing STEM Challenges. Students experiment and then use their data to build three different items: Bungee Jumps, Ramps, and Flood Barriers.

➡️Note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately. Just click on the titles.

Some specifics about each design challenge:

Bungee Jumping

  • Students will experiment with dropping a toy figure with an increasing number of rubber bands – a modified bungee jump!
  • They will keep data tables of the jumps and then average the jump trials.
  • They will also graph the results and after 7 jump trials will use the data table and graph to attempt to predict the number of rubber bands that will be needed to jump from a much higher height.

Building Ramps

  • Students will be experimenting with cars and ramps. They will test ramp heights and what happens when weight is added to the cars.
  • They will use their data as they design and build their own ramps.
  • How does Newton’s laws of Motion fit into this? How high should a ramp be? What happens if you use too much weight? What happens if your ramp is too steep? Does a ramp need side rails? How do you make a smooth transition at the end of the ramp? All questions that will be part of this challenge!

Build a Flood Barriers

  • Students will experiment with absorbent materials to try to find the one that absorbs the most water.
  • Then students are challenged to use available items to build a barrier that will slow or stop the flow of water.
  • One of the building items can be the absorbent material the team found to be the best. The rest of the materials are just things you gather that they can use to build a barrier. The barrier is built inside a pan and when the team is ready you will pour two cups of water into the pan to see if the barrier works. The tricky part of this challenge is that the house is made of paper!
  • The scenario we used for this challenge was to build a barrier to protect a doghouse!
  • In addition to the experiment and building of the barrier, students will also work with a budget feature for the task. The building items will be priced and students will choose these while staying within a given budget. The cost sheet we used is provided, as well as an editable cost sheet in case you need to change the building items and/or prices.

Check the individual listing for each package for more information. Each of these challenges includes a scoring rubric and a file with all forms in an editable format.

This set is a combination of three STEM Challenges. If you prefer they may be purchased separately:
