This STEM challenge was used in my 4th and 5th grade classrooms. My students loved it and it incorporated so many science standards it's unreal. In this package you will have; standards that are involved, the challenge, material list, bird research worksheets, math task, a group table, budget design and an extension as well as a justification page.
Standards included for science are;
GLE 0407.2.1- Design a simple experiment to illustrate the effects of competition, predation, and interdependency among living things.
GLE 0407.3.2- Investigate different ways that organisms meet their energy needs.
GLE 0407.4.1- Design a simple demonstration that illustrates the relationship between reproduction and survival of a species.
GLE 0407.5.1- Classify animals according to their physical adaptations for obtaining food, oxygen, and surviving within a particular environment.
GLE 0407.8.2- Differentiate between weather and climate.
GLE 0407.10.2- Investigate how light travels and influenced by different types of materials and surface.
Math standards include;
4.NBT.B.5- Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by one-digit whole number and multiply two two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
4.MD.A.3- Know and apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real- world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
4.OA.A.1- Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison (e.g., interpret 35 = 5 x 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5). Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.
4.NBT.B.4- Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Fluently add and subtract within 1,000,000 using appropriate strategies and algorithms.
