Description
Are you looking for a STEM Activity that focuses on Teamwork? This one is PERFECT and it has easy prep! The twist is that students will work in groups to design 2 different devices and then join the structures with a partner group!
That's right—two groups using the same materials are building two different structures that will be combined into one working model. This is the ultimate in Teamwork!
What is the challenge?
- Students will design and create a rescue cranking device or a rescue carrier using the same supplies.
- Each task has its own requirements.
- The rescue cranking device group will partner with a carrier group to combine the two structures into a rescue method for retrieving cargo from the bottom of a “cliff.”
- Can the crank team make a device to wind up the rope (string)? Can the carrier group create a container that will not dump the cargo? Can the two teams work together to carry out the rescue?
What is your prep?
You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes straws, craft sticks, string, rubber bands, construction paper, and tape. The weights we used for the cargo were mini marshmallows.
The package specifically contains:
- Cover
- Teacher Background
- Materials and Preparation page
- 2 pages of Teacher Step-by-Step Directions
- 2 pages of Helpful Hints
- 3 pages of photos
- Task constraints to display
- Task requirement cards to use with each group
- Lab sheets specific to each task
- Sample answers of lab sheets
- Scoring rubric
- All forms are provided in an editable format.
- The page count listed includes everything.
