Description
This is a set of three STEM Challenges that all involve seeds. These challenges are perfect for springtime but can be used year-round. Easy prep challenges using materials you already have are always perfect!
Please note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately. Just click on the titles.
Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for each challenge. The packages contain step-by-step procedures for teachers, clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The included lab sheets for students are also marked. Students will plan independently and then with teammates to create the best solution to the design challenge.
What are the challenges?
- Students will use materials to design and build a model of one way seeds are dispersed.
- Each group will be assigned one of the seed-dispersal methods and then must determine which materials can best be used to build a model.
- Finally, the teams will share their creations and demonstrate how they work.
- Students will be incredibly creative in finding a way to disperse the seeds and will love sharing their final product.
- It should also be noted that this challenge would be great as a culminating activity for your study of plant growth, and students should already have some knowledge of plants and the seed development process.
- I have included a seed dispersal chart for your convenience.
- Students will use materials to design and build a bird feeder that must be functional and adhere to construction constraints.
- Students can view and critique images of bird feeders to gather ideas, then sketch their own versions.
- After discussing their options, students will list materials needed for the task based on the items you have gathered.
- The completed bird feeders can be painted and varnished for outdoor use.
- Students will use materials to design and create a three-dimensional flower model with all parts labeled.
- They will choose the materials they wish to use to showcase the flower parts and are challenged to make the parts appear real, while still using their creativity and imagination.
- You will need to have worked on the parts of the flower before tackling this challenge, as some background knowledge will be necessary.
- I have included some drawings of flower parts for your use and a chart listing the parts and their functions, but there are no specific lessons on the parts and their functions.
Note: Each challenge includes a scoring rubric and an editable forms file. The editable forms include lab sheets, materials lists, rubrics, and constraints pages.
