What are the challenges?
- Students will be challenged to consider which variables to include in the final ultimate hoop flyer.
- Will they choose everything or only the best possibilities?
- After testing as many variations of the original plane as time allows students use their recorded data to make decisions on a design.
- They will have a chance to improve the model they eventually build and learn from their mistakes!
- Students will find a way to use the straws to hold the bucket aloft and then test it with weight.
- As it gets heavier and heavier they will make on-the-spot adjustments as they see weak points of the tower buckle or collapse.
- You can opt to add a requirement that their design must include a functional reason for a tower having a bucket.
- Students will be challenged to find a way to use the two materials to make a three-dimensional shape that will piece together and keep its shape.
- This is challenging since the side panels need to be made with shapes that have sides of the same length.
- Students will also need to decide if their structure will be a dome or a sphere.
