Description

Another Rescue STEM Challenge! This one involves creating a winding or cranking device that will be lowered into a ravine to save a fallen teammate! This one involved some fantastic teamwork!

What is the challenge?

  • Students will rescue a teammate who has fallen over a cliff.
  • The scenario is that the students must use what they have in their hiking backpacks and what they can find in nature to build a device to wind up the fallen person.
  • There are some strict constraints with this task! The pretend items used from nature are heavy and must be used in specific ways to work.
  • Students use smaller models of the items- like a dowel stick for a tree branch or paper clips for carabiners! Can they make a cranking device with a handle that will successfully rescue the fallen person? What happens if the rope they have is too short? Can they create a way to make the rope longer?
  • You can opt to have teams rescue a dropped object rather than a person.

What is your prep?

You will need supplies in addition to this package. These include dowel sticks, empty tape spools, paper clips, masking tape, string, small cups, straws, craft sticks, an object representing the fallen person (like Lego men or ping-pong balls), scissors, and desks or platforms representing the cliffside.

The package specifically includes:

  • cover, teacher background
  • materials and preparation page
  • 8 total pages of teacher directions
  • an additional page of hints and extensions
  • a constraints list in poster form and a smaller version
  • 4 pages of photographs
  • lab sheet
  • scoring rubric
  • In addition, all forms are provided in an editable format. Student answer sheets are not included, but samples from student work are included in the teacher direction pages. The page count listed for this package includes everything.

This challenge will need 1-2 class sessions to complete.

This STEM project was a great addition to my classroom! It challenged students to think critically and problem-solve, while still being super fun and hands-on. The directions were clear, and the activity encouraged teamwork and creativity. My students were fully engaged from start to finish—highly recommend for any teacher looking to add a meaningful STEM experience!
