If you need easy-prep and math-based activities you are going to love this challenge! How tall can you stack 100 cups? Can you calculate the mean, median, mode, and range with your data? This is a perfect challenge to practice these math skills and increase the level of teamwork with your students
What is the challenge?
- This ONE-DAY STEM Challenge is a GREAT introduction activity or review for finding mean, median, mode, and range.
- The activity package has 4 tasks and will have your students stacking and building with cups!
- As towers are built students will stop and count, calculate averages, determine the median, mode, and range, and have a lot of fun!
What is your prep?
You will need cups in a size of your choice –each group needs 50, meter sticks, calculators, and a timer.
This package is jam-packed:
- It has complete and detailed directions for each task.
- The detailed teacher directions include a materials list and an explanation of the preparations needed.
- To use this activity on a second or third day a list of modifications and extensions is provided.
- Each task is presented on its own page with hints and suggestions to guide you.
- Photos are provided of the activity being completed.
- For the student work, there are two versions of the lab sheets. One version has data tables for two of the tasks to calculate mean, median, mode, and range. The second version has three events that practice these skills.
- A scoring rubric is included.
- All forms are editable.
Ideas for Cups:
► Ask parents to donate cups!
► Ask a local soft drink bottling company for donations. Or a local vending company.
► Your PTA or PTO will help!
► Shop at Dollar Stores.
► For enough cups for your class, it will be between $5-$10. But, the cups are reusable for future projects! Win-win!
