Description
Are you ready for a fantastic STEM challenge? Here it is: Zip Lines! Your students are going to cheer when you tell them about this one! After experimenting students will improve their models and everyone will watch the passenger carriers fly down those lines!
What is the challenge?
- This challenge is one of the best ones we have completed! We all loved it!
- Students will build their passenger carrier and experiment with different line types for the device.
- This will determine the best ride for each team’s carrier.
- Finally, students will have the opportunity to try a re-design!
What scenario did we use?
The team works for a company that makes outdoor toys and play areas. The company wants to market a zip line kit that can be purchased in a department store. The kit would need everything in it to build the zip line in a yard and must be priced at a reasonable cost. (NOTE: This challenge features a budget for the activity.)
What is your prep?
You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes fishing line, plastic cord, string, 3-ounce cups, card stock, ping pong balls, straws, metal washers, paper clips, tape, skewers or dowel sticks, scissors, hole punchers, calculators, and containers for student supplies. Substitutions for any of the materials can be made.
The package specifically includes:
- Teacher Background
- Materials and preparation page
- 10-page Teacher's Guide
- Information about Newton’s Laws of Motion
- Constraints list
- Price list for supplies (students use this)
- Cost listing sheet (students use this)
- 3 pages of photographs
- 2-page lab sheet, sample answer sheets
- Scoring rubric
- Bonus Challenge that creates a zip line for Santa
- Editable file with all the forms!
➡️ NOTE: I had more students excited about this challenge than almost any other project we have tried. They loved it! My favorite comment I overheard was, “Man, we have to take some of this tape off and reduce the friction!”
