Description

Here’s a set of three STEM activities you will love that involve using wind power to propel something. Students will be building a wind-powered boat, a wind-powered car, and a windmill! It’s all part of a seasonal package celebrating the windy month of March! These challenges can be used at any time of the year!

➡️Please note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately. Just click on the titles.

What are the challenges?

➡️Build a Wind-Powered Car

Students will be using materials to design a rolling car that is wind-powered. They will have to consider the placement of the car’s axle and the size of the wheels in order to make the best car. Also, they must decide if a very long car is the right way to complete this task. In order to use wind power, the car will need a wind-catching device- like a sail! Many decisions will be considered to solve these problems! Finally, the car will be tested by blowing a very strong wind (a fan) on it to see just how far it will travel.

➡️Build a Wind-Powered Boat

Students will be using materials to design a boat that will sail successfully because of the sail they create. The challenge is all about the sail because the body of the boat is made from an unsinkable material! First, students will experiment with different geometric shapes and sizes and test to see which works best. They may also experiment with using non-geometric shapes and test those. Finally, they will use the experiment data to design and build a sail for their ultimate wind-powered boat!

➡️Build a Windmill

Students will be using materials to design a windmill that has turning blades that are powered by the wind. Students will be faced with deciding what to use for the turning mechanism and ensure that it turns well. They will also have to design the blades of the windmill to best catch the wind and turn smoothly. The design of the windmill tower itself comes into play as it must provide a stable platform on which to place the turning mechanism and blades.

➡️Here's a short video showing the challenges in action: "March into the Windy Month".

Check the individual listing for each package for more information and more detailed previews. Each challenge includes detailed teacher directions, photos, lab sheets, scoring rubrics, and tons of tips. Also, each challenge includes forms in an editable format.

This set is a combination of three STEM Challenges. If you prefer they may be purchased separately:

This resource exceeded my expectations. It’s clear that a lot of thought and effort went into creating it. The directions were straightforward, the design was visually appealing, and it worked seamlessly in my classroom. My students enjoyed it and I could see real learning happening. I’ll definitely be coming back for more from this seller!

I used this for Saturday school for 4th and 5th grade students. I tied this to the story, "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind." The students were very engaged and came up with very creative designs. This resource was perfect for my learning objectives. Resources were very useful and had all the information needed to implement the lesson. I appreciate the seller's note about the sewing cartridges to use as wheels.

We had so much fun making the boat in groups and then testing the boat with the whole class watching. As a teacher, I enjoyed the pages where advice for each project is provided. Great resource!

I made STEM kits for students to check out. The students are online by choice, so having an opportunity to participate in these activities is awesome! They love the STEM kits and the families loved that they could participate with their students. Thanks!
