Description

Your students have been hired to design stage lighting for a music concert. In this STEM project students will use reflection, refraction, and light traveling in a straight line. This project contains criteria and constraints, allowing for open-ended design while exploring a specific standard. The materials list includes at least one item that doesn't work, so students can learn through trial and error.

Standards:

  • NGSS 3-5-ETS1-1
  • NGSS 3-5-ETS1-2
  • SC.3.P.10.3 Demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another.
  • SC.3.P.10.4 Demonstrate that light can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed.
  • TX 5.6C

Includes:

· Teacher guide

· Projectable (or printable) scenario page

· Student guide page

· STEM group job assignments

· STEM poster

· Discussion questions

· Reflection rubric

Materials Needed:

Teacher Materials:

• Neutral wall or paper to serve as
”stage”

• Books or similar to prop up lighting rafter

Student Materials:

• Laser pointer with white light

• Large craft stick or dowel (rafter)

• String

• Refraction: Small container with lid for water, “glass” gems, diamond cut beads

• Reflection: tin foil, mini craft or science mirrors, shiny paper

• Straight beam: bendable straw

• Scissors, tape, glue

Important Notes:

· This STEM project requires a variety of materials to keep it open ended. Please see the material list above.

· This file is not editable.
