Description
This easy-prep activity is one of the most unique STEM Challenges ever! The premise is simple: it’s a group tower-building project and I mean the entire class. Yes, that is right! It is a powerful way to build community and learn about being on a team. A platform tower is built at each table but each tower is worked on by every team!
What is the challenge?
- There are six teams. Each team begins with a bin of materials and a set of task cards.
- Every team completes task 1 with a 4-5 minute time limit. Then they rotate!
- That’s right, they all move to the next table. Then every team completes task 2 on the structure that was started by a different team.
- After 4-5 minutes, they rotate again.
- Every team completes task 3 on the structure that has now had two different teams working on it.
- This continues through 6 rotations.
What is your prep?
Supplies needed in addition to this package include cardboard pieces, craft sticks, straws, string or yarn, and masking tape.
The package specifically contains:
- Cover sheet
- Teacher Background
- 4 pages of Teacher Directions
- Constraints page
- Group Task cards for rotations
- 3 pages of Photos
- Scoring rubric
- Pages for alternative use of the challenge (without rotations)
- Terms of Use
- And just for you – all forms are provided in an editable format!
➡️Simple teacher procedures are included.
- Go over the constraints and task cards, explain the rotation procedure, and then stand back and watch this challenge unfold.
- We ran into all kinds of interesting dilemmas! What if the first team uses too many materials? What if a table runs out of tape due to previous teams using too much? What if a team cannot complete their task well? What will teams change as they arrive at a falling-down structure?
- This is a perfect challenge to end with a discussion of teamwork and planning ahead!
