Description
Engage students with a real world math project as they design and build scale models using geometry and architectural concepts. This STEM activity helps students apply scale, measurement, and spatial reasoning in a meaningful real-world context.
A real-world geometry project! Get your students' hands busy with the construction of a scale model of their favorite landmark in this 21st Century Math Project. Through practicing skills with scale and measurement, students will learn foundational architecture and engineering concepts.
This is a hands-on STEM Project for hands-on learners and provides a nice departure from the grind of the daily classroom, and culminates in a project that can fit nicely on display in your school or classroom.
In this 34-page document, you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, and handout resources for students to use.
In “Keeping Things in Proportion,” students familiarize themselves with scale and basic architectural concepts through simple scale drawing exercises.
In “Rescaling & Remodeling,” students will measure drawings of famous landmarks and redraw them in a different scale.
In “Map Your World,” students create a scale drawing of a hallway in their school. Recording sheets and graph paper are included in this file.
and all of this leads to...
“Scale Model”. This provides procedures, resources, and a student packet for students to research, design, and build a 3-D scale model of a building.
