Description

TWO Week guided project for constructing and interpreting scatter plots. This engaging scatter plot project is individualized to allow students to research areas of interest. This project is great for a math end of year activity but it can also be used year round! Students will gather data on their topic of choice and use the project plan to organize their data into a scatter plot. Students will then analyze the results of the data collected.

Six posters to guide students as they work independently:

★ Choosing a scatter plot topic that makes them curious

★ Things to consider when constructing a scatter plot

★ THREE posters to assist with interpreting data

★ Making predictions using a scatter plot

Lessons for how to model constructing a scatter plot.

THREE Introductory Class Projects include...

♦ Using Measurement to Gather Data

♦ Using Experimentation to Gather Data

♦ Using a Survey to Gather Data

Project allows students to choose a topic they are curious about.

♦ Students will be required to...

→ Gather Bivariate Data

→ Construct a Scatter Plot

→ Interpret the Scatter Plot

→ Construct a Line of Best Fit if Linear

→ Interpolate & Extrapolate

Rubric is provided for easy scoring.

I'm glad the project was helpful, but I am sorry it was difficult for you to follow. My students and I are enjoying this project in class currently. As I walk through the steps again myself, I will attempt to make sure the directions in the lesson are easy to follow. Thank you for your feedback, Allyson.

Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association.
Know that straight lines are widely used to model relationships between two quantitative variables. For scatter plots that suggest a linear association, informally fit a straight line, and informally assess the model fit by judging the closeness of the data points to the line.
Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems in the context of bivariate measurement data, interpreting the slope and intercept. For example, in a linear model for a biology experiment, interpret a slope of 1.5 cm/hr as meaning that an additional hour of sunlight each day is associated with an additional 1.5 cm in mature plant height.
