Description

This 3-in-1 statistics bundle includes guided notes for scatter plot, correlation and trend line and an investigative lesson on correlation coefficient as well as a card sort to practice finding the correlation coefficient/R-value when given a graph. See the descriptions below for all the details and let me know in the Q & A section if you have any questions.

Suggestion: Start out with the Scatter Plot guided notes and between Pages 3 & 4 implement the Correlation Coefficient Investigation & Card Sort.

Scatter Plot/Correlation/Trend Line Guided Notes

This guided notes page covers:

  • Definitions of scatter plot and correlation (association)
  • Different types of correlation and examples of each
  • Definition of Line of Best Fit (Trend Line/linear regression) and examples
  • Definition of Correlation Coefficient
  • Matching section to practice identifying the correct correlation coefficient

The guided notes are super easy to print and go. Just copy front and back on one page and have students fold in half to create a one-page “booklet”. This is great for Interactive Notebooks, but can be used for any type of notes you use for your class.

A complete answer key is provided.

Correlation Coefficient Investigation & Card Sort

Students will first investigate the significance of the correlation coefficient, gaining an understanding that the r-value helps to determine the strength and direction of the scatter plot. For the Investigation, students will:

• Practice graphing a scatter plot by hand.

• Practice using a graphing calculator to find the r-value.

• Investigate various scatter plots to understand the significance of the correlation coefficient (what the value means in describing the scatterplot’s strength and direction).

This resource also includes a card sort so that students can demonstrate their understanding of the correlation coefficient. They use the cards to match each given scatterplot with its most reasonable correlation coefficient.

An answer key is provided for both activities.
