PRE-VIEWING - Students have 20 minutes to complete this part, which will be followed on with a class discussion and sharing answers. There are 4 questions based around concentration camps, the Nazi Party, the persecution of Jews and about Jews having to wear the yellow badge. Example answers included.

PART 1 - Comprehension questions. I have made two sets for differentiation. Answer keys included.

• 55 questions requiring full sentence answers.
• 35 questions requiring full sentence answers. (20 questions removed from the 55 question set)

PART 2 –Discussion questions. Example answers included

• There are 5 long answer higher level questions for the students to complete and later discuss together as a class.

PART 3 – Mini essays

• Students write from the perspective of three individuals (a Jewish person hiding in the ghetto, Mrs. Schindler, and a German soldier), each with a different experience of the ghetto massacre. They should describe the thoughts and emotions these individuals may have had, based on the events shown in the film.

Based on the novel Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally, the film follows the incredible true story of German businessman Oskar Schindler. Trying to make his fortune during the Second World War by exploiting cheap Jewish labor, Schindler starts a factory in occupied Poland. As World War II progresses, and the fate of the Jews becomes more and more clear, Schindler's motivations soon switch from profit to human sympathy, saving many Jews from the Holocaust.

How can movies help students learn English and be educational?

Movies can be used as a follow on from a novel study

- There are a huge number of movies that have been adapted from books which allow for book to movie comparisons or simply as a reward for finishing the book.

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context. To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions, debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarizing.
