Description

Thank you for your interest in Science Picture Sorts Super Bundle! My students love sorting activities, and I am confident that yours will too. Picture sorts are a great way for students to internalize and construct meaning of new information, make real-world connections, and for teachers to easily assess student understanding. They are also a wonderful tool for helping students develop higher order thinking skills and visual literacy.

Included in this growing bundle are the following sets:

States of Matter

This is a simple set of thirty-seven vibrant picture cards for sorting into the following categories:

  • solid
  • liquid
  • gas

Force and Motion

A simple set of forty-two vibrant picture cards for sorting into the following categories:

  • roll, spin, slide; and motion
  • friction and gravity
  • push and pull

Natural Resources

Fifty four colorful cards for sorting into the following categories:

  • natural resources and man-made resources
  • natural resources and products/use energy resources and material resources
  • renewable resources and nonrenewable resources
  • reduce, reuse, and recycle

Forms of Energy

Forty-eight real-life pictures that illustrate the following energy concepts:

  • Mechanical Energy (Kinetic and Potential)
  • Electrical Energy
  • Light Energy
  • Thermal Energy
  • Sound Energy

Properties of Matter

Forty-four real life pictures that illustrate the following properties:

  • buoyancy and relative density
  • mixtures and solutions
  • electrical conductors and insulators
  • thermal conductors and insulators
  • magnetism

Earth's Surface

Eighty real life pictures that illustrate the following concepts:

  • Landforms (specific to TEKS 5.7)
  • Sediment and Sedimentary Rock
  • Processes that change Earth's Surface (slow / fast changes)

Suggestions for use

Closed sort: Closed sorts have clearly defined parameters and definite correct answers. Many of these cards depict multiple examples of different states of matter. If conducting a closed sort, be specific about what part of picture is the focal point.

Open Sort: Open sorts are my favorite to conduct in class. They are just like their name says….”open”. In other words, there is no correct or incorrect answer. Students simply sort the cards based on their own observations. This is where you, as the teacher, can assess the depth of a student’s understanding. You will be amazed at some of the connections your students will make! Encourage your students to share their sorts with the class. I have found this often spurs other students on to think “outside of the box”.

Sorts make great small group center activities!!

This is a growing bundle, which means that once you have purchased the set, all you have to do is download the updated version when I add future sorts (and I will be adding more!).
