Description
Have some Back to School fun with a Science Tools Lockbox activity, focusing on science tools and measurement.
I’ve had students cheer when I tell them that we are doing a Lockbox Challenge! This activity has yielded 100% engagement.
SKILLS ASSESSED
☐ calculating the volume of liquids in graduated cylinders
☐ recalling the units of measurement for mass, volume, temperature, length, and elapsed time
☐ using a digital scale to place items in order from least to greatest mass
☐ interpreting the mass shown on a triple beam balance (images provided)
☐ calculating the difference of length between two objects using a centimeter ruler
HOW IT WORKS
Teams complete 6 tasks placed in envelopes, working together to solve the code for each task. Each task has instructions and an engaging activity.
I recommend offering a small prize that students will enjoy to the teams that open the box! I like to keep the prize a secret until they open the box.
If you have a lockbox and locks, awesome! If not, you can complete the activity digitally or just with paper.
LOCKBOX OPTIONS
You have three options for this challenge! For all options, provide teams with one Lock Notes sheet to record their work.
1. Lockbox
Use a traditional lockbox, hasp, and 6 locks. Teams open the lockbox after successfully cracking all 6 task codes.
2. Printable Keys
If the combination is correct, they get one of the printable keys for the Task. When a team has collected all 6 keys, they are done!
3. Digital Lockbox
Rather use devices? Have students complete the Google Form. You only need one device per team.
GUIDED SETUP
Teacher instructions are detailed step-by-step with several helpful pictures and explanations for each option, as well as videos that show the lockbox setup. Follow the easy instructions to print, laminate (optional), and organize the tasks in envelopes for each group.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This product is perfect. I appreciate you saving me time (and even a little heartache) by tying in the lockbox aspect with measurement skills. It's a skill needing lots of practice every year, and this challenge will definitely make it more engaging! Thanks so much! - Brooke H.
