Description

In this unit, students will become early explorers! They will research an explorer and create a news article about their journey, write a persuasive letter to the "queen" (you! the teacher! or king!) for funding to build their ship and sail, build a stem sailboat and sail it across the "ocean", and report their findings to the queen.

*Rubric and Digital GoogleSlides options for explorer article and letter included!
Student examples and teacher's guide inside!

STUDENT TASK:

It's the age of discovery! People's minds are sparked and asking scientific questions! What else is out there in the world? Are there new lands to conquer? Is the earth flat? Explorers are creating proposals to Kings and Queens for funds in hopes of taking to the sea to discover new land in the name of the 3 G's: God, gold, and glory. These explorers were brave, curious, and persistent. They had to face overwhelming obstacles and rely on themselves and their crew to make it to their destinations. You have decided you are one of these brave risk-takers and would like to sail to discover new land. You will need to create a persuasive and scientific proposal in order to convince the King and Queen to fund your expedition. Once you have your funds, you will need to design and create your ship and plan your expedition. Then, once set, you will take to the sea and must face the challenges along the way! Do you have what it takes to become the next rich and famous explorer?

Overview:

Step I: Research an explorer
Learn from another explorer's journey to apply to your own!

Step 2: Create your proposal
a.) Persuasive cover letter:

b.) Scientific proposal

Persuade the King and Queen using both your persuasive writing skills

and the scientific method to write a convincing proposal to obtain your

funds!

Step 3: Ship Design

Plan & build your sea-worthy ship using the engineering design process!

Step 4: Complete your journey!

In this design a sailboat STEM challenge, you will set sail and answer three challenge cards that determine the weight your ship will need to withstand. Make it to the other side successfully and you've discovered new land!

Step 5: Report your findings to the Queen.
