Description
Anticipatory Set: Mention a food or other product whose advertisement is familiar with students. Have them make statements about the product. Discuss the difference between observation (the cereal is sweet) and inference (the cereal is good for you). Have students identify the inferences they have made about the product. Point out that advertising can sometimes led to a person making inferences. EX: cereal contains vitamins=healthy for you.
Instruction Strategies: class discussion, independent work
Materials: powerpoint, youtube, ws
Activities:
1. Students will identify an observation an inference for each picture/ad and attempt to determine if the inference is correct.
2. Science process skill: Inferring → go over powerpoint on inferring
3. While going through pictures students will complete the Process Skills inferring activity page.
4. Students will make observations about the ads then write their inference for what they believe the ad/picture is telling them.
5. Students will determine if the advertiser was sending an accurate message
