"I LOVE this resource! I use it each year without fail. The biggest thing I am thankful for is the ability to use it easily in the classroom as a normal task card activity. If we need to transfer to distance learning, I love that I am able to still use this resource very easily. "

Description

Students learn to identify INDEPENDENT and DEPENDENT variables. They plan and carry out a simple experiment to reinforce variable identification. Students practice the basics of experimental design, collecting data, and summarizing results. This lab allows students to discover the challenges of conducting a controlled experiment through trial and error.

In this activity, students will:

  • READ a brief article about the differences between dependent and independent variables and how to identify variables in a hypothesis.
  • ANSWER text-dependent questions based on the article.
  • PERFORM a simple lab to reinforce identifying variables.
  • GRAPH data from the experiment.
  • ANSWER lab follow-up questions.

Supplies Needed:

  • Bouncy balls (we got 50 on Amazon for $10!) or tennis balls
  • Meter sticks or measuring tape
  • Masking tape to secure meter sticks (optional)

I loved this activity for reviewing independent and dependent variables and carrying out a lab procedure step by step. The best thing was the students had the freedom to choose the independent variable in the lab allowing for ownership of the data. They also had the opportunity to determine how the experiment would be performed before being told how to do it correctly. Great lesson.
