Scientific Notation Doodle Notes and Task Cards
Share

Description

I find that scientific notation is quite difficult to understand from a middle school mindset. "WHY would anyone ever express a number this way?!" is the question I am always answering. Little do they know, that expressing numbers in scientific notation is actually BETTER than write out a number like 0.00000756 and trying to work with it.

These doodle notes will allow students to reference back to the steps for solving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with scientific notation. I believe doodle notes engage students in note taking. Most students will doodle their notes anyway, so why not allow them to doodle with skilled-related objects to connect their understanding! After filling in the blanks and possibly coloring their notes, they can practice solving problems using the 12 task cards provided (6 word problems, 6 computational problems).
