Description

In this problem solving mini-project, students will review their skills of scientific notation operations of add, subtract, multiply, and divide. The mini-project activity is presented as taking the role of a real estate agent trying to answer questions about potential two properties that they may want to purchase.

To do this project students should know how to:

  • Add and subtract numbers in scientific notation, both with the same power of 10 and with different powers of 10
  • Multiply and divide numbers in scientific notation
  • Write numbers into scientific notation and into standard form
  • Compare/order numbers in scientific notation to see which is bigger
  • Problem solving using the skills above

This activity is great as a review of these skills, practice before a quiz, or part of a sub plan if you are going to be out a period.

All files are provided as PDFs. Questions too Hard or too Easy? There are provided links to editable Google Drive files and so all questions are easy to adapt for the needs of your students.

Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other. For example, estimate the population of the United States as 3 × 10⁸ and the population of the world as 7 × 10⁹, and determine that the world population is more than 20 times larger.
Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology.
