How long will it take to complete this lesson?

  • This lesson could be taught in 1 or 2 lessons depending on age. Prior to teaching, a basic familiarity with Scratch is encouraged but not required.

What age is this lesson plan suitable for?

  • This space game is suitable for students from 6 to 12 years old, depending on their experience with Scratch and coding concepts. It is ideal for students in elementary and middle school who are learning or expanding their knowledge of computer programming.

How should I use this resource?

  • This game can be taught in classrooms or online and can be teacher-led or student-led - providing the flexibility to cater to different environments and learning styles.
  • I recommend that you first watch the video tutorial before class to get an in-depth understanding of the code.
  • If you decide to guide your class through this game, once class begins, demonstrate the game to students, and provide them with the link to the Google Slides (you can post it on Google Classroom and make a copy for each student). Give students time to complete each step. After each step, take it up with the class (you could ask for student volunteers to help) and repeat this process until everyone finishes.
  • If you decide to let students tackle this activity on their own time, simply provide them with the google slides.

My students loved working on this coding activity as a class. It took us about 3 math periods to get through. I allowed them to add different elements to their game once they were done, such as designing their own sprite to look like the original flappy bird or designing their own background.
