Description
Hands on and engaging math centres for a Sea theme. These challenge cards have students make a variety of different 2D Sea creature shapes from pattern blocks that encourage visual discrimination skills as children rotate and flip smaller shapes to create the new shape.
Focus shapes included - triangle, square, rectangle, rhombus/diamond, hexagon, trapezoid.
I have added two sheets that explain the shape names. One with diamond and one with thin rhombus. You choose which one suits your needs of the students you teach and the syllabus you follow.
There are 4 different response sheets to choose from depending on your students ability and what skills you want to focus on. Skills on the response pages include: counting, graphing, creating, writing, analysing graphs.
Each Sea Theme puzzle comes in three formats - different versions that allow for differentiation:
• Colour - pattern blocks for students to match with number of shapes needed
• Colour - pattern blocks for students to match -students work out number of shapes needed
• Outline of shapes - B&W version that has the shape of each piece.
• Shape - challenge students to find their own pattern blocks to create the pictures.
There are 4 different response sheets to choose from depending on your students ability and what skills you want to focus on. Skills on the response pages include:
•counting how many of each shape, which in turn becomes part of a simplified procedure of how they built Squishy's friend. They colour the shapes and then draw the friend.
• graphing how many of each shape that they used to make Squishy's friend. Then writing an explanation of what the graph tells them- this could be a simple as how many more triangle blocks, than square blocks, addition of shapes, 3 squares and 1 hexagon is 4 shapes altogether, and even fractions what is the fraction of yellow shapes used.
• completing a birthday invitation to Squishy's birthday and drawing them at the birthday party.
Themed puzzles include:
Fish
Octopus
Seal
Whale
Crab
Lobster
