Description
Decimals in a real world math project! Bring students behind the scenes of some of the biggest websites in the world. Any website that has a search feature will be using a search engine algorithm composed of decimals. In this project, students will investigate, use and create these algorithms to rank websites or products based on their scores. Will their decisions be the same as Google's? They will find out in this 21st Century Math Project.
In this 16 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, two practice assignments and one project. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***
-- In “Order of the Internet” students review ordering and comparing decimals. At the end, students will need to add multiple decimals together and compare the sums.
-- In “Search Engine Algorithms” students practice using a search engine algorithm. Students will multiply common search engine factors by a given weight. They will then add these decimals together to get a score and compare the sums. All of the website scores are fictional.
-- And finally, “Start Your Engine” is designed to have students choose their own weights for a search engine algorithm. Once they have their weights they will write the equation with variables and apply their algorithms to fictional website data. They will then be able to compare their three highest ranking sites to Google’s three highest sites.
