Description

This "secret message" activity will amuse your students and teach them about evaluating expressions with exponents.

Directions: In each row, determine the greatest value. Circle the letter next to the greatest value in each row. The first one has been completed for you.

Some questions involve a simple base and an exponent, while others include terminology written out in word form, such as "cubed" or "to the fourth power".

At the end, read the message from top to bottom. (A hint is given: This is where Mr. Exponent works.) It reads, "At the power plant." (The other letters spell "Sorry he got fired.")

And all you have to do is copy it! The prep is all done for you. It's easy to check. Just see if they found the secret message! It's up to you to determine how much work you require your students to show. Use it as group work, homework, enrichment, or extra practice.

You can get this activity and 12 more in the Secret Message Math Bundle. Check it out! You save over 50% by buying the bundle.

Thanks, and enjoy!

Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.
Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s³ and A = 6 s² to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.
