Description
As a inquiry lab activity, this lab may be done prior to teaching students about sedimentary rocks. Students will need to classify the sedimentary rocks based on physical properties they observe. Students will create their own classification system for their samples and then compare/contrast to the existing classification system found in the New York State Reference Tables.
Materials needed: 6 different samples of sedimentary rocks. For example: Bioclastic Limestone, Sandstone, Conglomerate, Rock Salt, Coal, a rock with a fossil in it, etc.
The New York State Reference sheet for sedimentary rock classification is included for free.
