Description
This is an Earth Science Lab appropriate for middle school or high school science classes.
Objective: Students will create a model of sedimentary layers using colored sands in order to visualize and apply the principles of superposition and relative dating.
Materials:
- Small plastic bottles (empty and clean) - one per student
- Colored sand in various colors (can use regular play sand and food coloring)
- Pencils
- Paper towels
- Tray or box to catch spilled sand
- Lab takes one 45 minute classes.
- Teacher setup is minimal and supplies can be easily obtained and are inexpensive.

- MS-ESS1-4: Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth's 4.6-billion-year-old history.
- MS-ESS2-3: Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions.
- HS-ESS1-6: Apply scientific reasoning and evidence from ancient Earth materials to provide an account of Earth's formation and early history.
