Interactive Sentence Expansion Activity to Target Question Formulation

Is it hard for you to teach your students how to engage in back and forth dialogue? Me too! I've finally combined all my resources and created this line of products that works on asking questions with symbol support!

Build Questions About Preferred Food Items by combing 4 Words:

Do + you + like + FOOD ITEM

Great for Speech Therapy, Special Education, and Early Learners!

Uses realistic images that are appropriate for Middle and High School Learners in Special Education

Target increasing and expanding expressive language with this resource. Increase question building skills through exposure and modeling of consistent question structures. Repetition works, especially when your students can feel successful and independent!

Use this to target a range of communication skills!

  • question formulation
  • increasing syntax variety
  • teach functional and common words
  • expanding utterances up to 4 words
  • target generating a question to gain information
  • creating a functional question "Do you like ____?"
  • model question formulation with color coded supports
  • facilitate discrimination with 4 picture choices in Digital Version
  • used in partner or small group lessons to teach back and forth Q and A using provided visuals for support

Two Levels Included:

Level A (25 slides) - use color coded symbols to build a 4 word preferential question

Level B (25 slides) - build a preferential question using supports without color coded symbols

Two Versions Included:

-Drag and Drop Google Slides Version for Teletherapy Sessions, Tablets, and White Boards

-PDF Doc to be used as worksheets or with velcro for reuse (Great for set up in a typically sized 1 inch binder, can send back and forth from school to home for practice)

I've used this same set with AAC Users using the following communication applications LAMP WFL, Touch Chat, and Proloquo2Go!!

I model the question using these real familiar images and we use the color coded sentence strips to rebuild the question. This promotes independence for users and leads to quick generalization of targets!

I bought this to use for my students working on initiating question asking and all my students absolutely loved it! They were much more interested in one another and couldn’t wait to ask more questions. It’s a great first step of question asking. This was also a great visual model for my students using TouchChat.
