Sentence Building with Colourful Semantics!

Use this resource as a whole class focus, small group work or as an independent student task. It is a task that can be differentiated to a variety of student levels.

This download includes:

  • 7 sets of cards
    • The Red Set - 61 picture cards.
    • The Purple Set - 45 simple sentences.
    • The Blue Set - 21 simple sentences structured: who, where and when.
    • The Green Set - 21 simple sentences structured: when, who and where.
    • The Yellow Set - 13 complex sentences structured: who/what, what doing (verb), when, where and why.
    • The Orange Set - 13 complex sentences structured: who/what, what doing (verb), how doing (adverb), when and where.
    • The Pink Set - 13 complex sentences structured: when, who/what, where, what doing (verb) and why.
  • 33 Bump it Up! Sentence Worksheets.
  • A variety of colourful semantics templates.
  • 2 sizes of colourful semantics cards.

The use of colourful semantics in this resource aims to help and teach children how to build and understand sentence structures. It is a speech therapy approach that helps children understand the structure of sentences as it can be used to colour code and identify grammatical structures.

As a teaching approach, colourful semantics can be particularly useful to:

  • Support children in identifying and understanding the parts of a sentence.
  • Assist children in developing coherent sentences following the correct sequence.
  • Ensure children are incorporating verbs, adjectives and other key details in their sentence.

Students can complete a variety of tasks with this resource:

  1. Begin to independently write sentences using the picture cards as a prompt.
  2. Identify the structure of simple and complex sentences by identifying the different parts.
  3. Add greater detail to sentences by 'bumping it up' and adding adverbs and adjectives.

Use this resource in a write and wipe sleeve to ensure longevity!
