Description
This scaffolded sentence structure unit takes middle school students from identifying subjects and predicates all the way to writing with sentence variety — with 154 pages and slides of instructional content, plus over 50 pages of bonus materials.
Seven activities build on each other in sequence, so students develop confidence at each stage before moving to the next. Two pacing guides are included to help you plan — one for a standard introduction to sentence types, one for a scaffolded approach for students who need more support.
BONUS MATERIALS — included exclusively in this bundle:
★ Pretest — assess students' starting knowledge before instruction begins
★ Posttest — measure growth after completing the unit
★ Two pacing guides — one standard, one scaffolded for differentiated instruction
★ Flipbooks — one per sentence type for students to track definitions, notes, and examples
★ Flash cards — for review and reinforcement
★ Graphic organizer — sentence structure notes and reference
★ Self-grading Google Forms assessments — multiple checkpoints usable as pretests, exit tickets, or quick feedback throughout the unit
UNIT SEQUENCE
STAGE 1 — Simple Sentences
Simple Sentences Stations & PowerPoint | Subjects & Predicates
Build the foundation. Students study subjects and predicates through a presentation and 12 scaffolded stations — 60 practice sentences covering subject/verb pairs, compound subjects, compound verbs, and prepositional phrases.
STAGE 2 — Compound Sentences
Simple & Compound Sentences Grammar Sort
Introduce compound sentences with a presentation and flipbook, then practice identification with a 40-sentence grammar sort.
STAGE 3 — Complex & Compound-Complex Sentences
Continue with the presentation and implement 90-sentence worksheets and 60 task cards across all four sentence types. Self-grading assessments are included.
STAGE 4 — Sentence Building & Punctuation Rules
Sentence Structure Manipulatives
Students physically build compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences from pre-made clauses, practicing punctuation rules as they work.
STAGE 5 — Culminating Activities
Sentence Variety Writing Activity | Grammar to Writing
Move students from identification to application — analyzing how authors use sentence types purposefully and experimenting with sentence variety in their own writing.
Sentence Structure Sort & Grammar Game
Review all four sentence types with a print-or-digital sort that doubles as a classroom grammar game.

Great activities for reviewing sentence structure. My students appreciated the hands-on practice rather than another boring worksheet.
This is a fabulous resource to use before any writing unit! My students were better prepared to write complete sentences and paragraphs! Thank you!
Amazing! My students were struggling with this and this helped them stay focused as we reviewed.
