Description
Do you need an easy systematic way to teach your students grammar, syntax and sentence writing skills such as The Writing Revolution? Are you looking for language comprehension resources that align with a phonics program such as UFLI? Then look no further! This resource has both a teacher's manual, powerpoint slides and worksheets!
This resource provides teachers with an opportunity to teach using The Writing Revolution methodology whilst keeping in line with the UFLI Foundations Phonics scope and sequence.
Why do you need this?
Without both Language Comprehension and Decoding (reading) knowledge, students will not be able to comprehend what they are reading. This formula from the Simple View of Reading shows us simply why we need to teach language comprehension:
Decoding (D) x Language Comprehension (LC) = Reading Comprehension (RC)
Reading comprehension is the outcome! Both decoding and language comprehension abilities need to be strong for reading comprehension to occur and both can be taught explicitly.
This resource focuses on Grade 2 / Year 2 skills. Students will learn Sentence Construction in four lessons:
- Expanding segments
- Identifying sentence types
- Editing sentences for boundary punctuation
- Unscrambling sentences
This resource covers 4 skills over 4 lessons. Each lesson may take around 15-20 minutes of instruction and then 5-10 minutes of additional work for consolidation, such as worksheets. These can be provided in class and/or sent home for practice. Each lessons will be repeated throughout the week.
This resource is similar to that of the Grade 1 Set 2 in that it teaches some of the same concepts, however the resource itself has been changed to align with Grade 2 Phonics and expanded to include more sentence types and unscrambling sentences. The worksheets, sentences and pictures will be mostly new for the student. This will provide much needed interleaved practice for the students.
Contents:
- 100 PAGE Unit Plan with rationales, objectives, lesson order and materials list.
- POWERPOINT SLIDES (4 SETS, 131 PAGES in total) PARTIALLY EDITABLE - filled with pictures, questions, guided practice "I do, you do, we do", and interactive answers.
- WORKSHEETS FOR EACH SET - provides independent practice.
- ANCHOR CHART IN COLOR AND B&W - to print for your classroom boards.
How to use this resource:
Teaching Materials: The teaching document is intended to supplement the slides document which you will display on the screen for your students.
The teaching materials are laid out in an easy to print portrait mode. It contains all the information in the slides as well as information about objectives, contents, descriptions and instructions.
Lesson Materials: The lesson materials are laid out in landscape format to make it easy to display in the classroom. They are saved as a powerpoint document and are partially editable. Each picture is carefully chosen so that the student can form a sentence aligned with the scope and sequence of UFLI Phonics Grade 2 level. It will contain slides, worksheets and answers and follows an explicit teaching format.
Focus:
This resource primarily focuses on text and sentence structures. Although there are ample opportunities to be discussing and describing vocabulary and teaching background knowledge at the same time. The resource closely follows the concepts of The Writing Revolution ™.
By using this resource, sentence structure is explicitly taught and practiced systematically. There are ample opportunities to practice using an “I do, we do, you do” approach.
At the Grade 2 / Year 2 level most of the lessons are to be practiced orally and chorally with the teacher. However, this resource loosely aligns with the scope and sequence of literacy instruction UFLI Foundations. Most of the sentences will be aligned with basic alphabet, digraphs, VCe spelling, R-Controlled Vowels, Vowel Teams, Diphthongs, Suffixes and Prefixes etc. This means the student should be able to follow along with the teacher in reading and writing.
