Description

Help your students master sequences of rigid transformations (translations, reflections, rotations) with this partner activity! This activity gets kids talking like mathematicians! They will have to communicate precisely and question each other; it really helps build their math communication skills and gets them evaluating each other’s (and their own) work.

🌟Why teachers love it?🌟

  • builds mathematical vocabulary
  • encourages math conversations
  • builds precision and attention to detail
  • helps students evaluate mistakes and make corrections

Use this in your 8th-9th grade math class. This activity is great for a practice activity, review day, or early finisher activity.

How it works:

Pair up your students and give each partner a different page—one gets the “Partner 1” page, and the other gets the “Partner 2” page. Each page includes a unique transformation problem. Without showing their page to their partner, each student will analyze the sequence of transformations shown and write a clear, step-by-step description of what happened to the figure. Once both partners have completed their descriptions, they will take turns explaining their sequence aloud to each other. The listening partner will use the given original shape on their own page to perform the described transformations—relying solely on their partner’s explanation.
