Description
Teaching about setting in fiction has never been easier with this 5-day lesson plan! This standards-based (both CCSS and TEKS) interactive lesson study of the literary element of setting will have your students learning about, discussing, and applying ideas about how setting affects fiction, the characters, and the plot throughout the course of five days.
There are five engaging classroom-tested lesson plans that detail everything you will need to do, STEP-BY-STEP, to teach your students about setting. There are also graphic organizers for each day so that your students are able to apply their learning to the novels and stories you are currently using in class.
The five days culminates in a written paragraph identifying the setting of a familiar story, using textual evidence in support of the setting. This culminating writing assignments asks the students to take what they learned about setting and apply it to writing a paragraph, which is something that is so important in these days of Common Core and high stakes testing. There is also a graphic organizer to help scaffold the writing for your students.
Each of these lessons can be further applied to any novel study and will carry throughout the entire year.
Included in this resource:
- 5 Days of Step-by-Step lesson plans
- Interactive Notebook Pages
- Anchor Chart example
- Drawing the Setting organizer for any text
- Mentor Text for dissecting setting and its structure
- Setting Summary Plan for any text

This classroom tested project is something I have used in my own classroom across multiple grade levels with great success. The students enjoyed the process of learning about setting, figuring out various story settings, dissecting mentor text and then using those same ideas to a current classroom novel.
Prep is easy and painless. Everything you need to effectively teach your students about the setting of a story using novels and classroom literature is here! This mini-unit is a great way to hit many different standards across the curriculum AND have a wonderful display of student written work.
