Description

Help your students learn the language of Shakespeare before they attempt to read his work. When I planned my first Shakespeare unit for my grade 9 English class, I had to spend a great deal of time focusing on the history of the Renaissance, Shakespeare's life, and the language of the time prior to reading the play. The students had never been exposed to Shakespeare before and were a little nervous to take on one of his plays. By the time it came time to actually read the play; however, most of them were motivated and very much involved.

This unit is 19 pages long and deals with the complex language of the Renaissance. You will find:
•The basis of 16th century language
•Excerpts from Chaucer, Shakespeare, Defoe, Dickens and a modern rap to show the students how the English language has evolved in the past 600 years
•Modern-day phrases coined by Shakespeare
•A Shakespeare glossary of terms
•A Shakespeare insult kit

ELLs constantly struggle with the English language, and even more so with Shakespeare. I love any resource that helps give extra exposure without making it even more complicated. I really appreciated this and was so glad I found it!

I use this product to teach Shakespeare's play to my 9th and 10th grade ESL students. My students have a very hard time understanding the Elizabethan English versions of Shakespeare's plays, and this product really helps to clarify things for my students! I highly recommend this product for ESL and Special Education students!
