Description
This unit lesson plan focuses on the Elements of Art: Shape and Form and is designed to be flexible for teachers to adapt based on time and available materials.
The unit can be completed in three to four weeks, depending on how many of the included activities you choose to implement. It explores both organic and geometric applications of shapes and forms. Additionally, the unit features a dedicated lesson on Symbology, which teaches students how shapes are used to communicate ideas. This lesson includes a slide presentation, a video on symbology, a digital activity in Google Slides, and a student reflection component.
The final project for the unit is an Artist’s Choice assignment, where students select from three artist-inspired projects to complete their study, each concluding with a written reflection.
Key components of the unit include:
- The 5 Basic Shapes & Forms
- Techniques for rendering with art pencils
- Step-by-step instructions on shading spheres and other forms
- Geometric and organic still-life drawing activities
- Substitute resources (photographs of forms) for classes without access to 3D objects or for students who are absent or on independent study
The unit contains 8 activities ranging in duration:
- Quick activities (e.g., note-taking) lasting a few minutes
- Draw and Label 5 basic Shapes and Forms
- How to render a sphere: Tutorial with notes (includes video)
- Drawing exercises taking 1–3 days each
- How to use art pencils worksheet with tutorial (Includes Video)
- Rendering a Sphere
- Rendering Forms Tutorial worksheet
- Rendering Geometric Forms Still Life
- Rendering Organic Forms Still life
- A Google Slides activity (1 day)
- Symbology Exercise with reflection
- A final project requiring a minimum of 5 days
- Student Choice final project: 3 options to select from
- Artist's Reflection writing prompt (Google Slides - with Rubric)
