Learning to recognize the elements of a short story is a valuable skill for secondary students. It will help them appreciate the stories they read and give them an example of the elements to include if they write a story of their own.

Your students will read The Landlord's Trunk, an original 11-page short story written by Charlene Tess and then answer 10 questions about the following short story elements:
- setting
- character development
- theme
- character motivation
- diction and dialogue
- external conflict
- internal conflict
- protagonist
- antagonist
- climax
The story is about a young woman who gives up her own chance at happiness to take care of her father but learns much later that her father is a hypocrite who has never had her best interests at heart. The answers to the study questions are provided.
