Description
Sight words are a huge part of learning how to read. Once students are able to recognize high frequency words, they are able to begin to read simple sentences. Karate Sight Words is designed to track student progress, motivate students to learn, and challenge students who have already mastered high frequency words.
Karate Sight Words is divided into 8 levels that correspond to the karate belt levels. White, yellow, orange, blue and purple belts use high frequency words. Green, brown and black belts use high frequency words in common sentences and phrases. Each belt is divided into subtests. Students must pass each subtest before earning a belt.
There is a student and teacher tracker sheet. For the students, I place the tracker sheet in their daily communication folder. When they pass a subtest, they color in a corresponding circle. Once they have completed all subtests, the student will color in the large circle labeled with the specific belt.
For the teacher tracker sheet, I write down my students’ names and check off as they pass each subtest.
To test the students, I use the sight word cards for each subtest. I have included two ways that you can use the sight word cards. At the beginning of each section, the words are printed in black and white. You can copy the words on colored construction paper, laminate and cut out. Behind the black and white copy are colored versions of the words. The colored versions allow you to print and go!
You will notice a code on the top left hand corner of each card. W1 stands for White Belt Test 1, W2 for White Belt Test 2, etc. This helps you organize the cards after you print them out.
As the students read the words, I mark off their response on the Sight Word Recording Sheet. This helps me track which words they are missing within each set. During the week, I make sure that the students practice the specific words they missed. Check out my Sight Words Games and Sensational Sight Words Packets in my TpT store to purchase packets that correspond with each level.
I have included an editable Power Point template for you to add additional words or phrases that you may need. To add a word, click text box and type the word. You can then move the word to fit in the template.

This is so fun and motivates the students to work on their sight words!
This activity paired nicely with lessons learned during my personal karate instruction. For the kickoff, my instructor came dressed in full attire to present the white belt. If there's a karate dojo near you- ask them to participate. They can only say yes or no!
My students were so engaged and excited to learn their sight words!
Awesome Resource
I can't wait to use this resource when I start back in the classroom!
THANK YOU FOR MAKING SUCH A GREAT PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN THERE SIGHT WORDS!
My kids are loving our sight word ninjas! I would have loved a bulletin board option to use with this for the kids to have a visual to see the levels of their belts.
Everything you could need for fun with sight words!
