Description
Use this low-prep language arts resource as a fun way of giving your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students a special place to spell, read, write, and record their favorite pre-primer, primer, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade sight words/high frequency words.
How It Works: Students write and record sight words/high frequency words pulled from resources such as homework, word walls, spelling lists, unit themes/stories/decodables/fluency passages and poems into their Sight Words Are Great (SWAG) recording journals. Students can also write their favorite sight words as they encounter them. For example, if a student reads "again" in a passage, that word is placed in the SWAG dictionary under "A"; if the word "because" is read, then it is to be placed under "B", and so on.
NOTE: Words written on the pages of this recording journal can come from ANY sight word/high frequency word list, including, but not limited to, the following: Pre-primer Words; Primer Words; First-Second-Third Grade Words; or the F & P High Frequency Word List.
**This resource has been updated as of May 2021**

Gentle Suggestions/Tips/Reminders:
*INK SAVER ALERT! But for a few graphics, this resource has been created using black, white, and gray ink. Copy pages of your choice on bright colored paper for a look that “pops!”
*REMINDER: While you may want to have your students choose which sight words/ high frequency words to write into their recording journals, remind them that some sight words DO NOT SOUND the way that they are spelled. For example, the word “eyes” could be written on the page for words that begin with the long “I” sound.
*REMINDER: There are (blank) writing templates included with this resource. Depending on their academic needs and levels, you may wish to have your kiddos use them for drawing pictures, illustrations, and sketches and writing of their favorite sight words/high frequency words.
*NOTE: The RECORDING pages can be cut along the solid borders and glued into an interactive notebook or journal.
*Depending on the academic needs and levels of your students, you may want to have multiple (blank) copies of the recording pages available to accommodate your early and fast finishers.
*This resource is perfect for use with your ESL/EFL/ELD (English Language Development) kiddos, reluctant learners, and students who need that little push with practicing and mastering their sight words/high frequency words.
*This recording journal may be used for RTI, literacy centers, reading stations, during D.I.T. (differentiated instructional time), universal access time, ELD (English Language Development) instruction; reading/writing workshop, or small group instruction.
